GhostBed Mattresses
GhostBed Mattress (Original) Review
The Original GhostBed Mattress is an all-foam bed consisting of a combination of gel memory foam, latex, and high-density polyfoam. The cover is a polyester-viscose blend material.
Construction and Materials
The Original has two comfort layers. The top layer is a gel memory foam that provides pressure relief to contact points. The lower layer is an aerated Dunlop synthetic latex. It is a low-density latex foam that is good for absorbing and dissipating body heat. It also provides adequate support to prevent the sleeper from sinking further into the bed.
Instead of coils, the support layer is a bulky high-density polyfoam. This polyfoam is the densest of its kind currently used in a mattress in the market.
Firmness and Rating
The mattress is 11 inches thick and has a firmness level of 6 or medium-firm. That means the Original Mattress offers balanced pressure relief and responsiveness.
Average weight sleepers will have no problems sleeping in all positions as the mattress can provide them sufficient pressure relief at the contact points. They will feel their hips and shoulders are well supported, and their backs fully aligned.
With the GhostBed Mattress, the heavy sleepers will feel comfortable in all positions and find no intense pressure on the hips and shoulders.
The lightweight sleepers will find it a bit on the firm side. They will start noticing some pressure developing in the hips and shoulders as they change position, most of all on the side. This group would want a softer bed as a better option.
Original GhostBed Mattress Size Options and Price
Size | Dimensions | Price |
---|---|---|
Twin | 39" x 75" x 14" | $1,624 |
Twin XL | 39" x 80" x 14" | $1,624 |
Full | 54" x 75" x 14" | $2,584 |
Queen | 60" x 80" x 14" | $2,584 |
King | 76" x 80" x 14" | $2,774 |
California King | 72" x 84" x 14" | $2,774 |
Performance
The Original Mattress has a life expectancy (6 years). That is primarily a consequence of the all-foam construction. Memory foam tends to lose flexibility after much use.
The Original Mattress performed well on motion transfer. The multi-foam construction of the Original Mattress absorbed and isolated movements. That makes the Original Mattress more suitable for couples when it comes to motion isolation.
The Original Mattress did not have a big issue with off-gassing. There was an initial smell that eventually dissipated after some days. It does not have long-term off-gassing problems.
The Original Mattress sleeps warm because of the many layers of foam materials. The cooling devices in the upper layers were not enough in regulating the temperature.
The Original Mattress’ high-density foam base contributes significantly to limiting compression at the edges. That allows heavy sleepers to stay comfortably at the edges. It also means couples can utilize the whole space even with smaller beds.
The GhostBed Original did not make any noise while bearing weight. That is because of the absence of coils that can create sounds as time goes by.
Recap
The GhostBed Original Mattress is very affordable and would be a viable option for people working with a budget and don’t mind sleeping a bit warm.
GhostBed Luxe Review
The GhostBed Luxe is a high-end version of the Original Mattress. It keeps the multi-foam construction of the original model but introduces cooling devices to improve temperature regulation.
Construction and Materials
The cover of the GhostBed Luxe is a fabric incorporated with fiber padding and gel memory foam. The comfort layer is a combination of Phase Change Material, gel memory foam, and high-density polyfoam. The support base consists of a higher-density polyfoam that allows it to reinforce the upper layers. All that make up a thickness of 13 inches.
Firmness and Rating
The firmness level is medium (5), that gives a hugged feeling associated with memory foam beds. The mattress provides enhanced pressure relief at contact points like the shoulders and hips.
The Luxe is better suited to lightweight and average weight sleepers who tend to favor the side position. It reduces pressure at contact points for lightweight sleepers. It also provides adequate support at the hips and shoulders for the back and stomach sleepers.
The Luxe is excellent in providing the average weight sleepers with sufficient body contour (pressure relief) and adequate support. That is especially true when they sleep on their backs and stomachs.
The heavy sleepers were also comfortable on their sides. But as they changed positions, the pressure built up at contact points. They also sank deeper into the mattress. That caused resistance as they moved and switched to other sleeping positions. A firmer bed might be better for this group.
GhostBed Luxe Mattress Size Options and Price
Size | Dimensions | Weight | Price of 8" Version |
---|---|---|---|
Twin XL | 38" x 80" x 12.5" | 62 lbs | $1260 |
Full | 53" x 75" x 12.5" | 84 lbs | $1700 |
Queen | 60" x 80" x 12.5" | 89 lbs | $1800 |
King | 76" x 80" x 12.5" | 125 lbs | $2100 |
California King | 72" x 84" x 12.5" | 127 lbs | $2100 |
Performance
The life expectancy for the GhostBed Luxe is 6.5 years. That is due to the materials and construction of the bed. That puts the GhostBed Luxe at par with most multi-foam beds in the market. Sturdy frames and proper care can prevent early sagging of the foams and can extend the bed’s life.
Like most foam beds, the GhostBed Luxe effectively isolated motion transfer. It’s able to achieve this because it uses more foam materials. It means couples will not be disturbed by the usual motions while sleeping.
The GhostBed Luxe did not emit a strong smell. There was the usual initial smell related to packaging, but this dissipated after some days.
The GhostBed Luxe has a cooler sleeping temperature compared to most memory foam beds. The phase change material combined with the fiber padding at the top layers helped dissipate body heat instead of accumulating it over time. The Bouncy Layer also contributed to the overall cooling of the mattress. All these cooling devices employed by the bed help it achieve temperature neutrality.
For edge support, the GhostBed Luxe performed better than other foam beds. Its thick polyfoam base reinforced the top layers to counteract the compression made at the edges. The couples could sleep at the edges without the rolling off feeling.
Because the GhostBed Luxe has a multiple-foam construction, there are no coils that make sounds while bearing weight. That makes it a better option for people who are sensitive to noise while sleeping.
Recap
The GhostBed Luxe has a high price that matches its top quality features, materials, and construction. The regulated sleeping temperature significantly provides a comfortable sleeping experience. Overall, the Luxe is a viable option if you do not mind shelling out a bit more.

GhostBed Flex Hybrid Mattress Review
The Flex hybrid mattress is GhostBed’s first venture into hybrid mattresses. Its design emphasizes responsive support and cooling to offer a comfortable sleeping experience. It combines memory foam and polyfoam layers with pocketed coils to achieve that goal.
Construction and Materials
The Flex Hybrid has a quilted cover made of a polyester-viscose blend fabric with a phase change material that makes it cool when you touch it. It has a fiber lining for substantial airflow. The overall effect is a lower sleeping temperature that is quite pleasant to most sleepers.
The Flex Hybrid comfort layers have a mixture of gel memory foams and polyfoam that provides body contour for adequate pressure relief. Between the comfort layers and support layer is a transitional layer of polyfoam. This layer adds a cushion effect for enhanced comfort.
The support core consists of several 8.5-inch pocketed coils and 1 inch of high-density polyfoam. Two rows of thicker gauge coils are placed at the perimeter to reinforce the edges.
This layer gives the unique bounce the Flex Hybrid has. It also provides the bed with its firmness and shape.
Firmness and Rating
The Flex Hybrid has a firmness rating of 6 or medium-firm. The memory foam and polyfoam materials offer body-conforming quality while giving adequate support.
The Flex Hybrid is 13 inches thick. The overall effect is of full comfort and supported sleep. The Flex Hybrid is ideal for back and side sleeping. It provides enough body contour to relieve pressure on the hips and shoulders. At the same time, it supports the spine and lumbar area.
The Flex Hybrid offers a ‘hugging’ feel of memory foam with just enough bounce known to neutral foam beds. It allows you to make unrestricted movements or to change positions with minimal resistance thanks to its responsiveness.
The average weight class of sleepers feels considerably comfortable with the Flex Hybrid in any sleeping position as it gives them the right cushion effect to relieve pressure at contact points. It also gives them adequate support on the lower back and keeps the spine in proper alignment.
The heavier sleepers also find that the Flex Hybrid provides the appropriate balance between adequate support and sufficient pressure relief. They feel comfortable in all sleeping positions and find no intense pressure on the hips and shoulders. They also do not encounter resistance as they move during sleep.
The lightweight group found the bed to be a little too bouncy. They experienced considerable pressure at the contact points, like hips and shoulders. That can develop issues with spine alignment. A softer mattress would be a better option for them.
GhostBed Flex Hybrid Mattress Size Options and Price
Size | Dimensions | Weight | Price |
---|---|---|---|
Twin | 38" x 75" x 10" | 48 lbs | $859 |
Twin XL | 38" x 80" x 10" | 52 lbs | $1013 |
Full | 54" x 75" x 10" | 66 lbs | $1106 |
Queen | 60" x 80" x 10" | 77 lbs | $1234 |
King | 76" x 80" x 10" | 96 lbs | $1459 |
California King | 72" x 84" x 10" | 94 lbs | $1489 |
Performance
The GhostBed Flex Hybrid has a neutral cooling temperature. The phase change material, gel memory foam, and pocketed coils all work together to dissipate body heat instead of accumulating it. That translates into a comfortable sleeping temperature.
The Flex Hybrid performs well in motion isolation. The all-foam construction of the Luxe gives it a slightly better ability to absorb movement.
The Flex Hybrid also performs effectively on edge support. Its double rows of coils located at the perimeter provide superior reinforcement for the upper foam layers.
The Flex Hybrid has a lifespan of 7 years. Again, this is due to its coil support base. The Flex Hybrid initially had off-gassing at the time of unboxing. However, the odor dissipated soon afterward.
The Flex Hybrid’s coil support layer emits minimal sounds while bearing weight. However, it isn’t too loud to disturb sleepers during rest.
Recap
The Flex Hybrid comes with a reasonable price (roughly between the Original and Luxe rates). If you prefer a slightly firm bed that comes with decent temperature regulation, the Flex Hybrid is an optimal choice for you. It can effectively compete with other hybrids in the market like Brooklyn Bedding’s Bowery and Casper Hybrid mattresses.
GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Review
The GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress is the latest offering from GhostBed and its parent company Nature’s Sleep. Essentially an upgraded version of the GhostBed Flex Hybrid, it is the company’s direct competitor to Purple brand mattresses.
Construction and Materials
The structure of the 3D Matrix is similar to its forerunner, the Flex Hybrid. Starting at the foundation, it has a 1-inch high-density polyfoam base that supports the 8.5-inch pocketed coils.
Above the coils is a 1-inch polyfoam transition layer that separates the support base from the comfort layers.
Directly above the polyfoam transition layer are two 1-inch thick memory foams with slightly different densities that effectively form the comfort layer.
The unique feature is the top-most layer, which also gives this mattress its name. The 3D Matrix Gel Polymer is a proprietary material patented by GhostBed. This unique material adapts to the shape of the sleeper’s body by molding and stretching multi-dimensionally.
Finally, enclosing the whole structure is a quilted cover made of a polyester-viscose blend fabric that incorporates a phase change material.
Firmness and Rating
The 3D Matrix has a firmness rating of 6 or medium-firm. Although it has layers of memory foam, the feel is very different from typical memory foam beds. There is no excessive body contouring to make you feel engulfed by the bed.
On the other hand, it is not too bouncy to make you notice pressure points. We can say the 3D Matrix has one of the best balance between pressure relief (softness) and adequate support (firmness). That is all possible thanks to the neutralizing effect of the proprietary gel polymer to the memory foam.
The 3D Matrix Mattress is optimal for all body types and weights. It is also ideal for all sleeping positions. The ability of the gel polymer to adjust to the sleeper’s body shape means that regardless of the sleeping posture, the mattress will adapt to provide comfort.
GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Size Options and Price
Size | Dimensions | Price |
---|---|---|
Twin XL | 38" x 80" x 13" | $1313 |
Queen | 60" x 80" x 13" | $1871 |
King | 76" x 80" x 13" | $2246 |
California King | 72" x 84" x 13" | $2246 |
Performance
The 3D Gel Polymer also gives another advantage to the 3D Matrix mattress. It is an efficient thermal conductor. That means it will absorb and dissipate body heat instead of accumulating it. Together with the cooling cover and continuous air circulation provided by the coil support core, the 3D Mattress can offer a temperature-regulated sleeping experience.
As far as durability is concerned, the 3D Matrix has not been in the market long enough for us to have sufficient data to precisely gauge its life expectancy. We will then use the Flex’s lifespan of 7-8 years as a basis since they have similar construction and materials.
The 3D Matrix mattress excellent edge support. The memory foam effectively absorbs movements. The polyfoam layers counteract the bouncy effect of pocketed coils in the support layer. That makes the 3D Matrix an ideal option for couples.
The 3D Matrix also provides excellent edge support. The coil support core and high-density polyfoam base reinforce the top foam layers to minimize compression when you sit at the sides. That means you don’t get that falling off feeling while sleeping on the edges.
The 3D Matrix mattress initially emits an odor during unboxing. However, this smell dissipates after some time.
The 3D Matrix is relatively quiet while bearing weight. It is typical for hybrid beds to make some sounds eventually. However, the 3D Matrix uses high-quality coils compared to other mattresses.
Recap
Finally, the 3D Matrix comes with a rather hefty price. That is understandable considering all the top quality materials and technology incorporated into the design and construction of the bed. The comfortable and temperature regulated sleeping experience you get from this unique mattress is definitely worth the extra investment.
