Firmness and Rating

How Firm is The GhostBed Luxe Mattress?

The GhostBed Luxe has a firmness rating of medium-firm (5.5). The memory foam provides enough sinking and softness to relieve pressure.

5.5
Medium-Firm
Firmness Scale

The proprietary bounce layer prevents the sleeper from sinking further while providing enough support for back alignment. The bottom high-density polyfoam supports the two top layers and contributes to the bed’s firmness.

Sleeping On The GhostBed Luxe Mattress (Sleeping Positions)

The GhostBed Luxe can accommodate all sleeping positions, especially for lightweight to average weight sleepers. It provides adequate support for the back and shoulders while relieving pressure on contact points.

Back and side sleepers for all weight categories would not have any problems with the Luxe. They will be comfortable and will not suffer stiffness as the bed allows enough sinking and body contour.

Stomach sleepers, especially the heavier-weight group, will notice that their hips sink. That can lead to spine misalignment and lower backaches.

What does the GhostBed Luxe Mattress Feel Like?

Like all memory foam beds, the initial impression you get is a slight firmness that changes immediately to a soft, body-hugging feeling. However, because of the bouncy layer directly beneath the memory foam, you do not sink further. You will get a feeling of adequate support that helps in keeping body alignment.

The Ghostbed Luxe Mattress Review
The Ghostbed Luxe Mattress Review

The overall feel is a balance between pressure relief (softness) and support (firmness). It is one of the most comfortable beds in the market.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230lbs

Sleepers in this weight category find the Luxe as optimal for them. They experience substantial pressure relief in the shoulders and hips. At the same time, they experience continuous spine and back alignment in all sleeping positions.
Average weight sleepers do not encounter resistance when they move and change positions. That is possible because of the memory foam/bouncy layer combination.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

The GhostBed Luxe provides a comfortable rest for this weight category sleepers. That is particularly true when they sleep in the back and side positions. However, as they change to the stomach position, their hips sink substantially into the foam. That produces a slight pressure build-up on their lower back and spine. A firmer mattress may be the best option for heavyweight sleepers.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

Similar to the average weight sleepers, this group finds the Luxe provides them comfort in all sleeping positions. It is soft enough to provide pressure relief while being firm enough to give adequate support for the back and spinal alignment.

The mattress keeps the lightweight sleepers above the surface, so it does not hamper any movement or position changes.

Construction and Materials

Cover

The GhostBed Luxe Mattress has a proprietary cooling cover called “Ghost Ice Fabric” that is cool to the touch. It employs a Japanese technology of weaving cooling materials into the thread. The cover has a 1-inch gel memory foam quilted into the fabric plus another 0.5 inches of cooling fiber integrated into the fabric.

Comfort Layers

Called the Ghost Ice Layer, it is a 2-inch gel memory foam, which incorporates a phase change material that dissipates heat effectively.

Immediately under that is a 2-inch proprietary foam called Ghost Bounce Layer. This foam has properties of both latex and memory foam that combine responsiveness to pressure with body-contour ability, respectively. This layer also contributes to heat dissipation.

Support Layer

The support core is a 7.5-inch layer of high-density polyfoam that responds well to pressure. This layer reinforces the top comfort layers from compression and acts as a durable foundation.

Mattress Height

The total height of the GhostBed Luxe is 13 inches.

Mattress Performance

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The GhostBed Luxe has a cooler sleeping temperature compared to most memory foam beds. The phase change material combined with the fiber padding at the top layers helped dissipate body heat instead of accumulating it over time. The Bouncy Layer also contributed to the overall cooling of the mattress. All these cooling devices employed by the mattress help it achieve temperature neutrality.

Motion Transfer

The GhostBed Luxe effectively isolates movements because of its all-foam construction. That means couples will not be disturbed by the usual motions while sleeping.

Edge Support

The GhostBed Luxe provides better edge support compared to other memory foam beds. That is due to the Ghost Bounce layer combined with the high-density polyfoam base.

A slight compression is noticeable when you sit on the edge, but this is only minimal. It does not affect the overall support provided for sleepers near the sides of the bed. You will not get that “falling off the edge” feeling.

Durability

Memory foam tends to lose firmness over time. With that said, the Luxe is made of top-quality materials and is expected to last longer than most foam beds. Considering all that, we give the GhostBed Luxe a lifespan of 6.5 years.

Off-Gassing

The GhostBed Luxe initially has minimal off-gassing, which is typical of all mattresses. The odor dissipates after some time, so this is not a persistent issue.

Noise

The GhostBed Luxe does not make any noises while bearing weight. That makes it optimal for sound-sensitive sleepers to have uninterrupted rest.

Warranty Info

  2. Within the initial ten years, the company absorbs all costs on replacements or repairs, not including transportation expenses. Starting on the 11th up to the 25th year, mattresses may either be repaired with a handling fee, or be replaced with an adjusted fee including costs for transporting the unit. The fee begins at fifty percent in the 11th year and will become fifty-five percent by the 12th up to the 15th year, will become fifty-nine percent by the 16th up to the 20th year, and will be sixty percent by the 21st year up to the 25th year.
  3. This warranty includes all obvious lasting depressions 1 inch or more in-depth, and all physical damages.
  4. Warranty will not include the use of box springs aged over five years or those that lack proper support, and slatted metal or wood foundations that feature slats above 4 inches. Also not included are decreases in performance due to typical use. In particular: the responsiveness of the material, the ability of the unit to relieve pressure, and the overall cooling efficiency.
  5. This warranty is valid only with the original owner who bought the unit from an accredited retailer. All claims must include a copy of the official receipt or invoice indicating pertinent information (date, place, and price) of the purchase.
  6. All original owners should register the unit at GhostBed.com not later than 30 days after purchase to ensure warranty validity.
  7. The cover has a different warranty (valid for 1 year) and is not part of the mattress warranty. It specifies against factory defects and becomes invalid with all physical damages caused by the owner.

Comparisons and Alternatives

GhostBed Luxe VS GhostBed Mattress (Original)

The Original GhostBed Mattress and the Luxe are both all-foam beds. The Luxe is an improved version of the Original with an emphasis on cooling.

The Original consists of a combination of gel memory foam, latex, and high-density polyfoam layers. Its cover is a polyester-viscose blend material.

The comfort layer is also similar to the Luxe, a gel memory foam. But this time, it comes with an aerated Dunlop synthetic latex, a low-density latex foam that is good for absorbing and dissipating body heat.

The support layers of both models are of bulky high-density polyfoam. This polyfoam is the densest of its kind currently used in a mattress in the market.

The mattress is 11 inches thick and has a firmness level of 6 or medium-firm, slightly firmer than that of the Luxe. That means the Original Mattress also has a balanced pressure relief and responsiveness.

Average weight sleepers will have no problems sleeping in all positions as the mattress can provide them sufficient pressure relief at contact points. They will feel their hips and shoulders are well supported and their backs fully aligned.

In contrast to the Luxe, the heavy sleepers will feel comfortable in all positions and find no intense pressure on the hips and shoulders. The lightweight sleepers will find it a bit on the firm side. They will start noticing some pressure developing in the hips and shoulders as they change position, most of all on the side.

The Original Mattress has a life expectancy (6 years) lower than that of the Luxe. That is primarily because of the thicker layers of foam on the Luxe.

The Original Mattress performed the same as the Luxe on motion transfer. The multi-foam construction of the Original Mattress absorbed movements as effectively as the Luxe did. That makes the Original Mattress and Luxe both suitable for couples when it comes to motion isolation.

The Original did not have a big issue with off-gassing. There was an initial smell that eventually dissipated after some days. Both mattress models do not have long-term off-gassing problems. The Original Mattress has a warmer sleeping temperature than the Luxe due to the latter’s extensive use of phase change material and fiber padding. The Original Mattress’ cooling devices present in the upper layers were not enough in regulating the temperature.

The Original Mattress’ high-density foam base contributed significantly to limiting compression at the edges. That allowed heavy sleepers to stay comfortably at the edges. It also means couples can utilize the whole space even with smaller beds.

The GhostBed Original also did not make any noise while bearing weight. That is because of the absence of coils that can create sounds as time goes by. The GhostBed Original Mattress is priced significantly less than the Luxe. If you are working within a budget and can tolerate sleeping a bit warm, then the Original Mattress is your choice. Otherwise, you would have to shell out a little more to get the Luxe.

GhostBed Luxe Mattress VS GhostBed Flex Hybrid

The Flex hybrid mattress is GhostBed’s first venture into hybrid mattresses. Its design emphasizes providing responsive support and cooling. This produces a comfortable sleeping experience. It combines memory foam and polyfoam layers with pocketed coils to achieve that goal.

The Flex Hybrid has a firmness rating of 6 or medium-firm. The memory foam and polyfoam materials offer body-conforming quality while giving adequate support. The Flex Hybrid has a quilted cover made of a polyester-viscose blend fabric with a phase change material that makes it cool when you touch it. It has a fiber lining for substantial airflow. The overall effect is a lower sleeping temperature that is quite pleasant to most sleepers.

The Flex Hybrid comfort layers have a mixture of gel memory foams and polyfoam that provides body contour for uniform pressure relief. Between the cover and support layer is a transitional layer of polyfoam. This layer adds a cushion effect for enhanced comfort.

The support core consists of several 8.5-inch pocketed coils and 1 inch of high-density polyfoam. Two rows of thicker gauge coils are placed at the perimeter to reinforce the edges. This layer gives the Flex Hybrid model a fairly unique bounce. It also gives the bed its firmness and shape.

The Flex Hybrid is 13 inches thick. No wonder, this mattress is able to deliver a full night’s worth of well-supported and comfortable sleep. The Flex Hybrid is ideal for back and side sleeping. It provides enough body contour to relieve pressure on the hips and shoulders. At the same time, it supports the spine and lumbar area.

The Flex Hybrid offers a ‘hugging’ feel of memory foam with just enough bounce known to neutral foam beds. It allows you to make unrestricted movements or to change positions with minimal resistance thanks to its responsiveness.

The average weight class of sleepers feels considerably comfortable with the Flex Hybrid in any sleeping position as it gives them the right cushion effect to relieve pressure at contact points. It also gives them adequate support on the lower back and keeps the spine in alignment.

The heavier sleepers also find that the Flex Hybrid provides the appropriate balance between adequate support and sufficient pressure relief. They feel comfortable in all positions and find no intense pressure on the hips and shoulders.

The lightweight group found the bed to be a little too bouncy. Some even had issues with spine alignment. The Luxe Mattress is a better option for them. The GhostBed Flex Hybrid has a neutral cooling temperature. The phase change material, gel memory foam, and pocketed coils all work together to dissipate body heat instead of accumulating it. That translates into a comfortable sleeping temperature.

Both the Flex Hybrid and Luxe perform well in motion isolation. The all-foam construction of the Luxe gives it a slightly better ability to absorb movement. The Flex Hybrid has a better performance than the Luxe on edge support. Its double rows of coils are far superior in providing support than the high-density polyfoam on the Luxe.
The Flex Hybrid has a slightly longer lifespan (7 years) compared to the Luxe (6.5 years). Again, thanks to its coil support base.

Both models initially had off-gassing at the time of unboxing. However, the odor dissipated soon afterward.
The Luxe was quieter than the Flex while bearing weight. Its all-foam construction gave it an edge over the Flex whose coils made minimal noises.

Lastly, the Luxe is slightly more expensive than the Flex Hybrid. Still, since each mattress model has its own distinct advantage and tradeoff, at the end of the day, the user’s choice will come down to personal preferences.

GhostBed Luxe Mattress VS Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Mattress

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid Mattress is most similar to the GhostBed Luxe considering cooling efficiency. The materials used are also the same, albeit with different proprietary names. The Aurora is a mattress designed with a focus on temperature control. It features a cover that combines polyester and rayon with a heat-regulating material called PCM or Phase Change Material.

This material is cool to the touch! Then the layer beneath is called CopperFlex, which has copper infusion that dissipates body heat. The support layer is composed of 8-inch pocketed coils. The total thickness is 13.5 inches, very close to the Luxe.

All these features add to the overall cooling effect that gives the sleeper a comfortable temperature regulated sleep.
Aurora has a firmness rating of 6 or medium-firm. This provides a balance between support and contour. We found that the mattress relieves pressure very well and is suited for back and side sleepers.

Aurora is a firmer mattress, more adaptable to all body types and weights, and offers more support and pressure relief than Luxe. Aurora also offers more temperature regulation.

Finally, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora and the GhostBed Luxe have almost exact prices! As with the previous comparison, this will come down to personal preference.

GhostBed Luxe Mattress Vs Nectar Mattress

The Nectar Mattress is the flagship memory foam bed of Nectar Sleep based in Palo Alto, California. It is 11 inches thick and has a firmness rating of 6 or medium-firm. The Nectar Mattress is covered by a blend of TENCEL lyocell and cotton. It is a breathable cover that can be washed. It has two comfort layers of gel memory foams of different densities that provide pressure relief and spine support. Then there is a transitional layer of high-density polyfoam that prevents sagging. Finally, the support core is the thickest layer of denser polyfoam.

The construction gives the Nectar a luxurious but intensely supportive quality that is optimal with average to heavy sleepers in all sleeping positions. The lightweight group will find it too firm for them. As far as durability is concerned, both GhostBed Luxe and Nectar have about the same expected lifespans of 6-7 years.

In motion transfer performance, both models are very efficient in isolating any disturbances caused by a partner’s movement during sleep. That makes both of them ideal for couples. For out-gassing, both mattresses have an odor right after unpacking. However, this goes away after some days.

Both mattress models exhibit effective abilities in relieving pressure. The Nectar is optimal for conforming to the body and distributes weight evenly across the bed. It performs nearly the same as the GhostBed Luxe in this aspect.

All the Nectar’s high-density poly foams create a slightly warm sleeping temperature, but the cover and the comfort layers of lower density memory foams quickly dissipate the user’s body heat. With that said, the GhostBed Luxe still has an edge on the Nectar in this area because it has more cooling features that significantly help regulate sleeping temperature.

In both models, there is substantial compression when you sit at the edge. The GhostBed Luxe has slightly better edge support because of the responsiveness of its bouncy layer. The Nectar and the Luxe are very silent while bearing weight. That makes them optimal for sound-sensitive sleepers.

The Nectar Mattress is priced about 20% lower than the GhostBed Luxe mattress. With the overall superior features and performance of the Luxe, we feel it is worth the extra investment.
