Helix Luxe Mattress Review

Helix Luxe Mattress Review

Helix Luxe Mattresses are mainly hybrid mattresses that use a combination of foam and pocket coils. The unique marketing method of Helix is an enhancement of the usual online order process. It “chooses” the bed perfectly fitting the customer’s needs based on the information gathered from a “sleep quiz.”

Because Helix has more than ten mattress models available, they decided to make things simple by classifying the mattresses according to two factors: mattress firmness and customer’s preferred sleeping position.

This review will focus on the top 6 Helix Luxe mattress models:

  • Sunset Luxe– soft memory foam hybrid mattress for side sleepers
  • Moonlight Luxe– soft dynamic polyfoam hybrid mattress for back and stomach sleepers
  • Midnight Luxe– medium memory foam hybrid mattress for side sleepers
  • Dusk Luxe– medium dynamic polyfoam hybrid mattress for back and stomach sleepers
  • Twilight Luxe– firm memory foam hybrid mattress for side sleepers
  • Dawn Luxe– firm dynamic polyfoam hybrid mattress for back and stomach sleepers

We will look at their various features and performances like sleeping temperature, motion isolation, edge support, and other relevant information. We will also compare them to similar mattresses from other brands.

Firmness and Rating

How Firm are the Helix Luxe Mattresses?

Both the Moonlight Luxe and Sunset Luxe models have a firmness rating of 4 or soft. These models are optimal for lightweight sleepers who prefer the side sleeping position. The Dusk Luxe models and Midnight Luxe are rated 5.5 or medium. These are best for sleepers who want a balance between pressure relief and adequate support.

Firmness Scale

The Dawn Luxe and Twilight Luxe models are given a rating of 7 or firm. These are the best option for heavier weight sleepers as firm mattresses have less resistance to movements.

Sleeping on the Helix Luxe Mattress (Sleeping Positions)

The Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight Luxe models are most suitable for the side sleepers. Their memory foam comfort layers provide pressure relief at the contact points like the neck, shoulders, and hips. The Moonlight, Dusk, and Dawn Luxe mattress models are perfect for the back and the stomach sleepers. The proprietary dynamic foam used as comfort layers provides excellent support for the lumbar area. It also keeps the spine in constant alignment.

What does the Helix Luxe Mattress Feel Like?

All 6 Helix Luxe Mattress models have a generally bouncy feel because of the coil support system. The combination with a memory foam layer provides an initial body-hugging feel that immediately transforms into firmness. The support core prevents sleepers from sinking further into the mattress.

The models with the dynamic foam layer are more responsive and bouncy. They allow sleepers to move freely and change positions with minimal resistance.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230lbs

Each one of the 6 Helix Mattress models easily accommodated this weight group. At least the lighter portion of the group will be comfortable with the Sunset Luxe or Moonlight Luxe models. They will have superb pressure relief at the contact points while maintaining body alignment.

The heavier members of this group will favor the remaining models, especially the Midnight Luxe and Dusk Luxe models. These two mattresses provide the perfect balance between pressure relief and adequate support. They offered more cushioning at the hips and shoulders due to the comfort layer materials.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

This group favors the two firm models: Dawn Luxe and Twilight Luxe. These two models provide them with adequate support to prevent sinking of the hips, particularly in the stomach position. The responsive quality of these mattresses allows the heavier sleepers to switch sleeping positions and move with very little resistance.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

The Moonlight Luxe and Sunset Luxe models will be optimal for this weight group. Both models provide a body-hugging quality that relieves pressure at the hips, shoulders, and neck. The two models also provided enough cushioning that ensured adequate spinal alignment.

Cover

All of the Helix Luxe Hybrid Mattresses have a polyfoam-padded pillow-top cover. The fabric is made of 100% Tencel Lyocell synthetic material. This fabric has a smooth aerated texture that is comfortable and cool.

Comfort Layers

The Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight Luxe models have a proprietary gel-infused memory foam 2 inches thick. A 2-inch Helix dynamic foam layer follows the memory foam. This combination provides a balanced body contour ability and responsiveness.

The  Helix Luxe models have a particular layer of high-density polyfoam that acts as a buffer between the comfort layers and the support coils. These double layers provide a very responsive and bouncy feel of the mattress.

Transitional Layer

All the Helix Luxe models have a particular layer of high-density polyfoam that acts as a buffer between the comfort layers and the support coils. It prevents sleepers from sinking too much and isolates them from the rigid, uncomfortable coil system.

Support Layer

All six models are equipped with an 8-inch pocketed coil system with a 1-inch high-density polyfoam base. This combination provides a sturdy foundation and gives the mattress its shape and structure. Furthermore, thicker coils are placed along the perimeter to reinforce the edges of the bed to counter compression.

Mattress Height

The total height of all the Helix Luxe mattress models is 14 inches.

Helix Luxe Mattress Size Options and Price

The Helix Luxe Mattresses comes with a hefty price tag. The Queen size is at the $1600 range. With that said, there are several similarly priced brands in the same category. If you consider the diversity of choices available and the high-quality materials used on each unit, the Helix Luxe Mattress is worth the extra investment.

Mattress Performance

Sleeping Hot or Cold

All the Helix Luxe Mattress models have a cool sleeping temperature brought about by the continuous air circulation through the coil support system. The low-density polyfoams in the comfort layers dissipate body heat. That, combined with aerated Tencel material in the covers, provides a comfortable sleeping experience.

Motion Transfer

The Sunset, Moonlight, and Midnight Luxe models performed better in isolating motion because of the softer materials in the comfort layers. They absorbed motion and reduced transfer significantly better than the firmer models.

The Dusk, Twilight, and Dawn Luxe models were able to isolate some movements, but could not remove the transfer. However, because of their extra thick comfort layers, they were still able to fare better than similar hybrids in their category.

Edge Support

The Dusk, Twilight, and Dawn Luxe models exhibited excellent edge support because of the thicker coils placed at the perimeter. Firmer comfort layer materials also contributed to minimizing compression at the edges. That makes these models optimal for couples who tend to move around the bed considerably.

The remaining Luxe models (Sunset, Moonlight, and Midnight) also have thicker coils at the perimeter, but their softer foam components could not minimize compression as well as the firmer models.

Durability

Since the Helix Luxe mattresses are relatively new to the market, we do not have enough data to assess their expected lifespans accurately. We will, therefore, base our estimates on the quality of the materials used, together with the overall structural integrity, and give it 6.5 years. This expected lifespan is similar to that of a typical hybrid.

While hybrids have sturdy support components, their comfort layers tend to deteriorate over time and lose the original shapes. We recommend rotating the mattress frequently.

Off-Gassing

A noticeable but faint off-gassing odor can be detected during unpacking, but this dissipates after some time. The low-density foams do not absorb much odor, and the coil system circulates air effectively to remove any unpleasant smells.

Noise

The Helix Luxe mattresses do not emit much sound while bearing weight. The high-quality thick coils are more robust compared to the usual coils used in other brands. Also, the dense foams tend to absorb any sounds that the coil system may make.

Warranty Info

The Helix Luxe Mattress comes with a non-prorated warranty of 15 years. Here are the details.

  1. Helix reserves the right to replace or repair defective mattresses within the warranty period.
  2. The warranty is dependent on the use of appropriate foundations. Helix mattresses require a sturdy surface and robust base that is physically able to bear the weight of the mattress and its occupants. Any use of an inappropriate foundation may invalidate the warranty.
  3. Warranty includes any depressions or bending on the surface that is 1 inch or more. Also included are structural defects that cause cracks to the material, and factory defects on the cover.
  4. Warranty does not include depressions that are less than 1 inch. Also not included are claims caused by the owner’s change of preference, or any other physical damages.
  5. Any shipping costs of returned defective mattresses will be at the customer’s expense. When Helix determines that the returned units are defective, the company will reimburse the owner up to $100 of said shipping charges. All claims must be accompanied by a copy of the original purchase documents.
  6. Repair or replacement of a defective mattress does not create a new warranty. In cases of upgrades, the replacement mattress will have a new warranty valid for 15 years.
  7. Warranty benefits are solely given to original owners. All other owners who purchased the unit from the original purchaser or an unauthorized dealer will not receive the benefits.

Comparisons and Alternatives

Helix Luxe Mattress VS Bear Hybrid Mattress

The Bear Hybrid Mattress is the hybrid version of the original Bear Mattress. It incorporates polyfoam comfort layers with a coil support system to provide a comfortable, yet firm mattress for the active customers who need a relaxing and revitalizing rest.

Construction and Materials

The Bear uses Celliant fabric for its cover. The material captures body heat and transforms it to infrared energy, then redirects it back to the sleeper. That process helps to improve blood circulation, intensify tissue oxygenation, and aids in muscle revitalization after strenuous activities.

The Celliant fabric is quilted into a gel-infused polyfoam that adds cushioning to shoulders and hips.
The comfort and transitional layers also use polyfoam that gives the Bear Hybrid a responsive quality that prevents sleepers from sinking into the bed.

The support core has an 8-inch thick coil system attached to a high-density polyfoam base. This core assembly reinforces the mattress edges to counter compression. It also gives the bed its structural integrity.
The Bear Hybrid mattress has a total height of 14 inches.

Firmness and Ratings

The Bear Hybrid has a firmness rating of 6 or medium-firm. The overall feel is a responsive bed that gives adequate support. It also provides ample pressure relief and cushioning for contact points like hips and shoulders.

Sleeping Positions and Weight Categories

The Bear Hybrid is moderate to excellent for the side, stomach, and back sleepers. It provides enough cushioning to alleviate pressure at contact points. However, as the sleeper weight increases, mattress performance drops significantly.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230lbs

The Bear hybrid has the following results for this group: excellent for side sleeping, good for the back, and fair for the stomach. The sleepers had adequate support, but their hips sank as they slept on their stomach. That could develop into backaches and spine misalignment.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

For this group, the Bear hybrid had generally fair results in all sleeping positions. The mattress was a bit soft for this group, which made them sink further into the foam. It also restricted movement and made shifting positions a bit difficult. A firmer bed like the Helix Dawn Luxe or Twilight Luxe would be a better option.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

The Bear Hybrid was generally optimal for this group: excellent for the stomach position, good for both the back and side positions. The mattress is soft enough to alleviate any pressure at the contact points while giving adequate support for back alignment.

Mattress Performance

Sleeping Temperature

The Bear Hybrid has a cool sleeping temperature. That is due to the unique Celliant cover that transmits the heat back to the sleeper as converted infrared energy. The coil support system also contributes to the temperature regulation by providing continuous air circulation to dissipate heat.

Motion Transfer

The Bear Hybrid was only able to isolate some motion but did not stop the transfer completely. The bouncy and responsive quality of hybrids makes them weak motion insulators.

Edge Support

The coil support system reinforces the mattress edges effectively against too much compression. So when you sleep at the side, you will not feel like falling off the bed. That makes the Bear Hybrid an excellent option for couples.

Durability

The Bear Hybrid has been in the market only for two years, so there is not enough data to get a conclusive result. However, based on material quality, construction, and customer feedback, we give it a 7-year lifespan. That is mainly due to the robust nature of the 8-inch coils in the support core.

Off-Gassing

The Bear Hybrid has some off-gassing odor after unpacking from the box. However, this smell dissipates after some time. Furthermore, the coil system circulates enough air to dissipate any present odor.

Noise

The Bear Hybrid emitted only faint noises coming from the coil system. However, these sounds are not enough to disturb you from getting a continuous comfortable sleep.

Recap

The Bear Hybrid is optimal for people with an active life and falls into the category of lightweight to average weight sleepers. The Helix Luxe mattress offers more flexibility because of the variants available to the customer. However, the Helix Luxe is a bit more expensive than the Bear Hybrid.

Helix Luxe Mattress VS Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid Mattress

The Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid Mattress uses natural and organic materials for the comfort layers combined with pocketed coils. This mattress comes with three different firmness options: soft, medium, and firm.

Construction and Materials

The Bloom Hybrid has a cover made of natural wool and organic cotton blends that give some level of cooling.
Its comfort layer consists of a 3-inch Talalay latex foam. This particular latex variant provides an excellent balance in body-conforming (pressure relief) and responsiveness (support). It is also an aerated foam that aids in regulating the temperature.

The Bloom Hybrid has a layer of 8-inch thick pocketed coils fixed on a high-density polyfoam base. Together, the coils and polyfoam layer provide excellent reinforcement of the upper layers and edges. It counteracts excessive compression that can deform the foam components over time. The Bloom Hybrid Mattress has a total height of 12 inches.

Firmness and Ratings

The Bloom Hybrid offers three firmness options: Soft (3.5), Medium (6), and Firm (7.5). Each option has varying degrees of body-conforming and support. That makes the Bloom Hybrid highly adaptable to all sleeping positions and can accommodate all weight sleeper groups.

Sleeping Positions and Weight Categories

As a general rule, the softer the mattress is, the lighter the weight it can comfortably accommodate, and vice versa. Since you can choose the appropriate firmness for your needs, you get the optimal bed for your investment.

The Bloom Hybrid has very good to excellent results across all sleeping positions.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230lbs

This group favored the medium firmness option. The Bloom offered them a superb balance in pressure relief and ample support for proper body alignment. Other sleepers in this group also favor the other two firmness options depending on which end of the weight range they belong to in the group.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

Sleepers in this group prefer the firm option because it gave them the best support in all positions. They find the medium option offers only moderate support with ample pressure relief. The sleepers did not like the soft option because they sank considerably, which caused spinal misalignment.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

This group liked both soft and medium options. The soft option provided sleepers with extra cushioning for the shoulders and hips for effective spinal alignment. The medium option was perfect for the stomach and back sleepers in the group.

Mattress Performance

Sleeping Temperature

Bloom Hybrid has a cool sleeping temperature because of its natural cotton/wool blend, breathable Talalay latex layer, and the coil system, which generates air circulation.

Motion Transfer

Similar to the Bear Hybrid, the Bloom Hybrid was only able to isolate some motion but did not stop the transfer completely.

Edge Support

The coil support system reinforces the edges effectively against excessive compression. Sleepers will not feel like falling off the bed. That makes Bloom Hybrid an excellent option for couples.

Durability

The Bloom Hybrid is relatively new, so we do not have enough data to get a conclusive result. However, based on material quality and customer feedback, we give it an 8-year lifespan. Latex is more robust than memory foam, so it can resist wearing better. Also, the 8-inch coils in the support core add superior reinforcement.

Off-Gassing

The Bear Hybrid has some off-gassing odor after unpacking from the box. However, this smell dissipates after some time. Furthermore, the coil system circulates enough air to dissipate any present odor.

Noise

The Bloom Hybrid emitted only faint noises coming from the coil system. However, these sounds are not enough to disturb your sleep.

Recap

Both brands give you several options to match your personal preferences and specific needs. They also have very similar features and performances. Because the Bloom Hybrid is a bit more expensive than the Helix, the latter could be the better option.
